Campus Events & Promotional Materials

Showing Films on Campus

SMU student associations often ask about what movies they can show at campus events. The database that has public performance rights included in the licensing is Audio Cine Films

  • Movies can only be shown on campus for student related purposes.
  • Students, Faculty and Staff are the only ones allowed to be present.
  • The event must be free of charge.
  • Only movies available on the Audio Cine Films Streaming website are covered by this license.

This license does not cover outdoor movie events, fundraisers or events involving the public at large.

Notes on advertising for events with Audio Cine Films:

  • The event can be advertised as long as the publicity is local and non commercial in nature.
  • SMUSA’s website/social media is fine to use
  • If you want to use an image of the movie on your promotions they need to be approved by the studios (this can be provided by the Copyright Office upon request).

If you wish to host an event with a film from one of our other streaming services, this may be possible, depending on a number of factors, and will likely involve paying for additional licensing fees. Anything through Criterion will require the Society or Campus group to pay an additional licensing fee to Criterion.

Please contact the Copyright Office at copyright@smu.ca for further assistance. In your email please indicate what film you would like to display, and for what purposes.
