Freedom to Read Week

The American Library Association states that intellectual freedom is the idea that “every person has the right to access information from all points of view, in all formats, and without restriction”. When a book is challenged (by an individual, a group, or an organization), it is the first step in attempting to limit or remove access to it, therefore denying people’s intellectual freedom. This is just a handful of the books that have been frequently met with controversy across Canada and the United States. These books span across decades and hold stories about a range of topics, but they all have one thing in common: people wanting them removed from library shelves and school curriculums.
