Community Users Guide

A guide to assist community users with accessing and using the resources and services at the Patrick Power Library.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Students

International Baccalaureate students may use the Patrick Power Library with a valid IB card, providing their High School has a signed agreement with Saint Mary's University.

Borrowing Privileges:

Grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program are eligible to borrow books and other materials from the Patrick Power Library. IB students must present a valid IB student photo ID card at the Library's Circulation Desk.

The borrowing privileges for IB students are three weeks for books, seven days for periodicals and videos. Borrowed items can be returned at any Novanet library or public library in Nova Scotia.

  • IB students may renew materials online via the Novanet catalogue, but cannot use document delivery services, such as Novanet Express and Interlibrary Loan, or place recalls on items checked out.

Accessing Electronic Resources:

IB students can access most Saint Mary's electronic journals, research databases, and e-book collections in-person on designated "guest" computers within the Library. Due to limited computer workstations which are in high demand, there may be times when the Library will be unable to offer computer access to IB students. Off-campus access to databases and the use of databases with restricitive licenses is not offered to IB students.

High School Students

High School students who are not designated IB students are welcome to access and use the following library resources:

  • Online library catalogue (also available off-campus)
  • E-books and e-journals (in-library use only)*
  • Most research databases (in-library use only)*
  • Print collections
  • Microform and microform readers
  • Photocopiers and printers
  • Reference and research services

*Access is permitted to electronic books, journals, and most Saint Mary's research databases in-person on designated "guest" computers within the Library. Due to limited computer workstations which are in high demand, there may be times when the Library will be unable to offer computer access to high school students. Off-campus access to databases and the use of databases with restricitive licenses is not offered to high school students.

Borrowing privileges are restricted to adult members of the public aged 19 and over. For more information, please refer to Borrowing Privileges for Community Members.
