The Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) has made an agreement with Saint Mary's University to support open access publishing. Through this agreement, Saint Mary's University authours are eligible to receive discounts on Article Processing Charges (APC). The publishing discounts available to SMU authours are listed below.

American Chemical Society
SMU authors are entitled to an Author Processing Fee (APC) discount of $250.00 USD.
Authors should remind the publisher, when submitting articles, that they are entitled to Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) discounts.
Association for Computing Machines (ACM)
SMU corresponding authors may publish an unlimited number of accepted articles in Association for Computing Machines (ACM) Digital Library journals with no APC fee.
The Association for Computing Machines is transitioning all of its publications to Open Access, to be paid for by author publishing fees. Saint Mary's will receive premium access, and SMU authors will receive a full waiver of author fees.
All ACM authors retain copyright ownership of their published Articles unless their employer or government requires their Articles be placed in the public domain or require exceptions to this Policy. When submitted manuscript Corresponding Author will have the option to select Creative Commons license and other Copyright options.
The volume of SMU’s publishing output will affect future pricing of the ACM agreement.
Cambridge University Press
Corresponding authors from Saint Mary's and other participating CRKN institutions may publish an unlimited number articles as open access in all Cambridge hybrid and gold journals for the duration of the agreement (2025-2026). No article processing charge (APC) fees will be levied for open access publication.

Canadian Science Publishing
SMU authors are entitled to an Author Processing Fee (APC) discount of 25% on all journals except agricultural journals: (Canadian Journal of Agricultural Science, Canadian Journal of Soil Science, Canadian Journal of Plant Science).
As of January 1, 2023, corresponding authors affiliated with CRKN member institutions will be able to publish an unlimited number of articles as open access in the following journals at no charge:
1. Biochemistry and Cell Biology
2. Canadian Journal of Physics
3. Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology 2
4. Genome
5. Transactions of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering

Company of Biologists
Saint Mary's University researchers can submit unlimited fee-free open access research articles to the Company of Biologists 5 journals.
Authors should remind the publisher, when submitting articles, that they are entitled to a waiver.
Elsevier
Saint Mary's University corresponding Authors are eligible for unlimited open access publishing in over 1,800 Elsevier Hybrid journals with no Article Processing Charge (APC). Contact the Library for information about the journals which are included.
Saint Mary's corresponding Authors are also eligible to receive a 20% discount on the article processing charge (APC) for most Elsevier Gold Open Access journals. Several journals are excluded from the APC waiver, such as Cell Press, Lancet, and some other society owned journals.

Institute of Physics (IOP)
Saint Mary's researchers who are corresponding authors are able to publish an unlimited number of articles in IOP hybrid and gold journals at no charge.

Note that selected IOP journals are excluded from this offer.
Oxford University Press
Saint Mary's University corresponding Authors are eligible for unlimited open access publishing in Oxford University Press (OUP) hybrid journals with no Article Processing Charge (APC).
OUP Gold Open Access journals are excluded. However Saint Mary's corresponding Authors are also eligible to receive a 10% discount on the article processing charge (APC) for OUP Gold Open Access journals.

Royal Society of Chemistry
SMU authors are entitled to an Author Processing Fee (APC) discount of 15% for RSC hybrid journals.

SAGE
SMU authors are able to publish articles in SAGE Choice journals under an open access license with no Article Processing Charge (APC).
For SAGE’s fully open access journals, authors will only receive a 40% APC discount. Some Sage journals are excluded and have no open access option. The list of SAGE’s gold journals can be found here.
