Research Data Management

Licensing Data

The owner of the data must choose a licence and make it clear that a licence is applied to the data. You can apply a license by:

  • Choosing a license when you upload your data in a repository.
    • Many repositories, such as Dataverse, help you choose a license.
  • Including the license in the metadata of the research data.
  • Setting up a ReadMe file for the data.

For a detailed explanation on licensing data, check out the DCC How to License Research Data guide.

Choosing a License Template

Creative Commons template options include:

  • CC 0 - Public domain, waive all copyright control over your data in all jurisdictions worldwide. Data released with this license can be freely copied, modified, and distributed, even for commercial purposes. This is the default license in Dataverse, as one goal of the project is to promote open science.
  • CC BY -  This license lets others distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.
  • CC BY-NC - This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.
  • CC BY-SA - This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

If you are not sure which license to choose, Creative Commons has a tool to help. This tool generates a license code that you can paste into your work and others can apply when referencing your data. The code includes a link to the license you chose:
