Statistics Canada - Key Resources

Statistics Canada (Webpage, home)

Canada's national statistical office, providing key information on Canada's economy, society and environment.

  • Data  (Interactive Data Tables)

Use CANSIM to view time series tables on a wide variety of socio-economic topics. Tables can be altered by adding/removing different data dimensions (e.g., geography, sex, age group). Data in tables can be downloaded as Excel-compatible CSV files.

The Data Liberation Initiative

The Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) is a partnership between post-secondary institutions and Statistics Canada for improving access to Canadian data resources. This program provides access to a large collection of Public Use Microdata files and to a special collection of aggregate data tables. To complement the access Statistics Canada provide the DLI community with dedicated research assistance, support on how to use the Microdata files and tools to improve student and faculty access to the data.

Microdata files enable researchers to query data at a more detailed resolution than summary or aggregated data (such as found on the Statcan website) allows. Saint Mary's members can explore the Data Liberation Initiative Public Use Microdata Files (DLI PUMFS) Collection, using the Nesstar database (linked below), and can contact Joyce Thomson, Digital Services Librarian, to obtain further assistance.
