Our Course Reserve service helps make available, on short-term loan, single copies of faculty-supplied course textbooks, or Library-owned books, for general student use. In particular, Faculty are encouraged to place their copies of course textbooks on Reserve. Students frequently come to the Library in search of textbooks because they cannot afford to purchase them.
Class assignments, exercises, solutions, lecture notes, test answers, and copies of articles or book chapters are not accepted for the Reserve Collection and are best provided through the University's online course readings tools. The University's Studio for Teaching and Learning will assist you in using these tools.
Faculty should submit all Reserve material three weeks before the term begins. Items submitted after this time may not be processed until several weeks after the start of classes. All Reserve material must be submitted with a Reserve Request form, which can be submitted online or obtained in paper from Departmental Secretaries or from the Library Circulation Desk.
Reserve queries should be directed to Neil MacDonald, Access Services (reserves@smu.ca / 902-491-6317)
This service helps instructors connect students with readings and course content in an accessible manner. We will review your assigned readings and provide links for licensed content that will work both on and off campus. We can also assist in finding Open Access resources, navigate Fair Dealing exceptions, and help you obtain copyright permission when required. Send your syllabus or course resource list to copyright@smu.ca.
If you plan to assign films in your courses, it's important to know that film licenses can expire, and streaming services might remove titles. Contact the Copyright Office before the start of the term to ensure films will still be available when your students need them.
More information is available on the Library's Copyright Guide.
